Chapter Six

I watched my cub dip her paws into the edge of the stream, then go splashing through the water, heedless of the near-freezing temperature. She was scaring away all the fish, but neither of us cared all that much. We’d found another persimmon tree still lush with fruit and enjoyed a few not long before.

I let out a short growl to signal that it was time to go. We’d been gone for quite awhile and Chrysta was probably wondering where we were. I was sad to end this time with my daughter. I had never felt this kind of emotional connection to anyone except my brother before I met Sophie. Showing her the mountain and teaching her to be a bear was the most rewarding thing I’d done in my life.

Sophie turned reluctantly away from the water and began to gallop toward me. She stopped short and let out a squalling cry of distress at the sight of another bear padding up silently behind me. I ducked my head down and nudged her reassuringly.

I turned to face the other bear and batted at him gently with my giant paw. It was my brother, Dalton. If I was in my human form, I might have asked him what he was doing here. But in our bear form, we didn’t need to speak.

He ducked away from my playful blow and backed up. I could see from his expressive eyes that something was wrong. He projected an image to me that made me want to bolt back to the cabin. My ex-wife. And she was heading up the mountain. I knew there was only one place she could be heading and nothing good would come of it.

I growled in annoyance and turned to reassure Sophie once more. I tried to project the image of Dalton and I as boys playing together and her head snapped up. It worked. Her fear of the other bear dissipated and she stepped forward to inspect him. He did the same, nuzzling her playfully as they circled each other. I projected the image of the cabin to them both and we all turned and headed back in that direction. I wanted to get back as fast as possible to diffuse whatever trouble it was Leanne was stirring up.

Leanne was my biggest mistake. I was dumb and hurt and thought I was in love when I married her. It had been almost two years after Chrysta and I split up and, looking back, I could see that Leanne had tried to worm her way in from the very beginning. She’d been so sympathetic during the loss of my fiancée, then as I recovered from the brief but unforgettable week I’d spent with Chrysta. She and her father, Walt, had me so brainwashed that I thought it was a good idea to start dating her.

She played the perfect girlfriend, then the perfect wife - until the honeymoon was over and we were back in Tipton. Then her true colors came out.
